Since 2004, the SSCN organizes an annual one-day conference, during which the latest developments in stem cell research and its potential applications are discussed and an exchange between interested parties (researchers, clinicians, and especially students) is encouraged.
The Congress is divided into two keynote lectures by international experts, several talks by Swiss researchers and clinicians, as well as short presentations of selected registered participants on the basis of their submitted abstracts. In addition, a poster session will be held, which represents an ideal forum for lively discussions.

Continued improvement in the nation’s health depends upon the development of affordable and effective medicines and new therapeutic treatments. The last 20 years has seen the growth of a global healthcare industry based on human proteins produced in transformed mammalian cell lines, with a current market value of £30 billion/year. There is now an opportunity to replicate this growth in new industries using human stem cells in pharmaceutical and regenerative medicine applications. This meeting will focus on exploring the biological and engineering challenges which lie ahead before cell based therapies can become an everyday reality.

Stem cell studies have demonstrated unexpected plasticity of cellular differentiation programs and challenged the long-standing paradigm of progressive irreversibility of cell fate during development. The field of stem cell biology interfaces with many areas of basic biology including developmental biology, tissue growth and homeostasis, regeneration, cancer and aging. Unlike most meetings on stem cells, the Keystone Symposia meeting on The Life of a Stem Cell: From Birth to Death focuses on stem cells within the context of the organism. Stem cell systems are discussed with respect to the life cycle of whole organisms: gametogenesis and embryogenesis, where tissue types are established; maturity, where organ systems are maintained in homeostasis; and aging, where stem cells systems change physiologically or because of disease. Speakers have been chosen to broadly reflect lessons learned from a variety of model organisms, experimental approaches and organ systems.

The 2012 Congress will have the same aim as the one of the previous ones: i.e. to take a view of the present and future clinical applications of stem cell research, with attention to the ethical aspects of these applications. However, recent moves of this research and new biological finding draws us to include in the program the developments of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) obtained by reprogramming ordinary, differentiated cells of the adult organism, such as skin cells (fibroblasts) (including the creation of cellular models of diseases, and possible developments in the field of regenerative medicine). During the meeting, we will follow the developments in the field of umbilical cord blood stem cells, and will pay attention to new sources of stem cells - stems cells from placenta, amniotic fluid and gingival fibroblasts. Finally, we will also consider other, more fundamental aspects of this research, which condition the success of treatments with "adult" stem cells, such as: understanding of pluripotency, research on stem cell maintenance, migration, differentiation, the niche, and the paracrine effect.

Determining the origin of tissue stem/progenitor cells is key to our understanding of developmental biology. This meeting will focus on how and when self-renewing tissue stem cells arise during embryonic development. Common features between different stem cell lineages will be discussed, and how modeling can inform in vivo studies.
