29 April - 1 May 2011

An emerging concept in cancer biology is that a subset of cancer cells among the heterogeneous cell mass that constitutes the tumour may drive the growth of the tumour. This so-called “cancer stem cell” (CSC) has the ability to self-renewal, differentiate into all the cell types of the original cancer and reinitiate the tumour upon transplantation. Despite of the clear importance of CSCs in the genesis and perpetuation of cancers, little is currently known about the biological and molecular properties that make CSCs distinct from normal stem cells, the developmental/cellular origin of CSCs, and identification of candidate molecular targets for therapeutic intervention. Furthermore, the implications of the microenvironment in the maintenance of CSCs are just emerging.
This symposium will try to shed new lights into:
- Pathways important for self-renewal of normal and/or CSCs,
- The heterogeneity of the CSCs
- New avenues to target CSCs
- Visualisation of the CSCs niche
Targeted audience: Researchers already in the field (or wishing to enter it), clinicians implicated in novel targeted therapies, students and biologists of solid tumour or hematology laboratories.

6 - 8 April 2011

Stem cell biology is progressing rapidly. The unraveling of cell mechanisms is leading to new concepts and strategies for clinical intervention, including disease modeling, drug screening and cell therapy. The conference will bring together research stakeholders, including stem cell biologists grappling with the complexity of cell fate determination, bioimaging and those using stem cells in patients.
The event is co-sponsored by the ‘European consortium for systematic stem cell biology’ (Eurosystem) project. Funded by the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), Eurosystem aims to interlink complementary biological and computational expertise so as to drive the generation of new knowledge on the characteristics of normal and abnormal stem cells. Project participants include universities, small to medium businesses (SMEs) and researchers from the public and private sectors.

]]> http://cordbloodeurope.org/?p=451 2011-04-01T12:06:31Z 2011-03-25T12:16:34Z Cairo, Egypt

25-27 March 2011

Following the success of the European School of Haematology conference with similar focus held in Tunisia in October 2010, the purpose of this meeting will be to provide an update on « gold standards » in the diagnostic procedures, evaluation of prognosis and treatment of all types of haematological malignancies. Therefore, procedures having shown their “robustness” and treatments having clearly demonstrated a benefit in outcome will be emphasized, rather than research procedures or treatments. This symposium should be of particular interest to specialists treating haematological malignancies, including younger physicians. It may also suit haematologists from less economically developed countries who want to introduce only widely validated procedures and treatments.
The conference will be chaired by B. Löwenberg, M. Elalfy, E. Gluckman and P. Fenaux.

A total number of 349,774 samples were stored in Europe at the end of 2010.
Cord blood contains very young and healthy stem cells which are currently used in the treatment of over 80 diseases. Other treatments are expected with the completion of some 15 clinical trials that are currently ongoing to investigate the therapeutic benefits of own cord blood stored at birth. The members of Cord Blood Europe have released 32 grafts either for individual treatments or for participants in clinical trials. Out of this total, 22 were destined for autologous and, respectively, 10 for allogeneic transplantation.

7 October 2010

The production of iPS cells from dermal fibroblasts has generated intense interest in the utility of such cells for research purposes and clinical applications. iPS cell production currently requires the use of transcription factor gene delivery to reprogramme cells into iPS cells. Hence, both gene delivery technology and iPS cell characterization and subsequent cell differentiation are critical aspects of iPS cell biology. This meeting will address both issues.
Main topics : Human ESCs into specific endodermal cell types, Stem cell states and the single cell, Derivation and utility of cardiomyocytes from human pluripotent stem cells, Reprogramming: from Technology to Biology.
